Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere
Space Invader in Bonn, Germany
We had found online photographs of about 7 or 8 Space Invaders in Bonn, but when we arrived last week, only ONE remained, the rest having been removed or taken down. DON’T THEY KNOW WHO ‘VADER IS?!
All these photos (and GIFs) are by LET, copyright remains with him. When I found this one and only Vader, I did a little moonwalk dance down the street. I’m too much Estima for these Germans to take.

And then I flew off the bridge and into the sky.
Check out my Space Invader category for all of his work that I’ve photographed around the world!
I’m one of View The Vibe’s cultural tastemakers
I was asked recently to be interviewed for View The Vibe, an online magazine that profiles Torontonians in the food, beauty and cultural sectors. It was a fun little interview where I talk about travelling, writing, and crying into my lattes (sort of). I also use the word “ejaculate.”
*tumbleweed*
. . . . . .
YOU SEE CHRISTINE, THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS.
Anyway, check out the interview here! Enjoy and leave a comment
Together we are more than you
Artist El Bocho is behind this other piece that I photographed a few months ago here in Cologne.
I found this on Vogelsanger Strasse.
Bonn jour

We went to Bonn, the former capital of Germany and birthplace of Beethoven. Perfect place to dance off the walls.
Don’t forget to take the time to dance today, munchkins.
Space Invader sticks it to ya

It’s hard to find any new Space Invader‘s that I haven’t already photographed around the world (check out my Space Invader category), although this week we’re going to Bonn (former German capital) to try and find more of his work. Anyway, I found this Space Invader sticker on a rubbish bin in Mile End, London. It looks like The Real McCoy to me.

Neighbourhood Watch

Found these in Dusseldorf.

Not sure who the artist behind them might be, but they are awfully similar to the work of Clet Abraham. Speaking of whom, I found some more of Clet’s stuff in London a few months ago:

Sorry for the grainy Blackberry pics but, you know, sometimes I forget the camera at home. This was just north of Oxford Street on a parallel street.

Sigh. Blackberry is shit.
Check out my Clet Abraham category.
The WaldMenschen of Freiburg (Tree People)
As we cycled through Freiburg’s vineyards, up hilly expanses, and down past antiquated villas, we ended up finding the Waldmenschen, or the “tree people,” where an artist took really old trees that had been felled and turned them into mythical characters, demons, lords, gods, saints and keepers of the people. It was a lovely trek through the forests to try and find more of these tree people (and we did some planking, of course).
Freiburg Street Art
All photos by LET, copyright remains with him.
I think this one is my favourite.
ha ha ha
Freiburg was one of my favourite cities in Germany to visit. They have such a beautiful landscape, rolling mountains, lush vineyards, and a gorgeous medieval town centre. They have a hotel there that’s 900 years old. Highly recommended place to visit if you’re in the south of Germany!
The Importance of Being Ernest (Hemingway)
In 1920, Ernest Hemingway, then a freelance journalist for The Toronto Star and struggling writer, wrote this letter to his wife Hadley:
“You can make me jealous—and you can hurt most awfully—’cause my loving you is a chink in the armour of telling the world to go to hell and you can thrust a sword into it at any time—”
And then he goes on to say,
“‘Course I love you—I love you all the time—when I wake up in the morning and have to splash around and shave—I look at your picture and think about you—and that’s a pretty deadly part of a day as you know and a good test of loving any one.“
You can read and view Hemingway’s letter in all it’s original handwritten glory here.
I have been reading simultaneously The Sun Also Rises and A Moveable Feast, I cannot get enough early Hemingway, and this letter is an excellent example of why his writing, while sometimes indulgent and dawdling, is also very evocative and moving.
Yes, he betrayed Hadley, and married four times, before shooting himself in the head, but as he writes in A Moveable Feast, “I wish I had died before I ever loved anyone but her.“
The best things in life are free but you can give them to the birds and bees, I want MONEY
This was just off of Hackney Road in London. You know when you fold up paper and take scissors to it and cut out heart shapes or people shapes? This little stencil has a girl who has cut out dollar signs
The style here looks like a Banksy but I don’t think it is, because this stencil wasn’t there the last time I went graff hunting up Hackney Road, so this is new. Banksy hasn’t done any new stuff lately, as far as I know …. amirightfolks?
What I see when I use the toilet
Found this near Shoreditch High Street, London. Because of the binary colours, it took me a while to figure out what it was exactly I was looking at. I recognized the legs. Then I saw the undies. Then the purse on the floor, which at first I mistook for an empty kleenex box (and then I thought, is she masturbating?). Straight ahead, I couldn’t tell that was a door, I thought it might be a television. But then the floor revealed itself to be tiled, and she must be in the loo, I figured.
Yup, that’s what I see.
The unknown artist chose a great spot on the wall for this wheatpaste.
Top marks.
Cycling through Freiburg
Whilst in Freiburg, in the south of Germany, we cycled through narrow roads, small villages, green reserves, up mountains, through vineyards (as seen here), past villas, down S turns, and through the ancient city with a hotel that dates back to the 1200′s. Freiburg was pretty sweet.
STOP MAKING ME LAUGH, DAMMIT. it’s my kryptonite.
oh yeah, see the sumptuous ornate historical village behind us? YOO-ROPE, bitches.
Space Invader in Switzerland
In Basel, we got a little giddy at this find. Case in point, LET gone bonkers.
This was across the street, but we’re not sure if it’s a real Vader.
But nonetheless, SPACE INVADERRRRRRRRRRR!

“We love even the scary looking ones.” -Herakut
I found this mural by international graff superstar Herakut in the Ehrenfeld area of Cologne (on Venloer strasse). Then German saying on the left translates to (I think) “Without you, i would not trust me.” … this is me exercising my German skills, I’ve been learning it on my own since January because I can’t afford the classes right now …I think I’m doing okay but progress is slow.
EDIT: LET tells me that it really either translates to “without you, i wouldn’t dare” or “without you, i wouldn’t have the heart.”
DAMMIT! so close.
